Architecture In his own words: Miguel Avila, winner of the DWR Eames House Contest. By DWR | July 1, 2013 Eames Molded Plastic Chair on the lawn at the Eames House. To win this trip was amazing. I was notified on a Friday but it took the entire weekend for the news to really sink in. My wife and I were really happy. This was our second visit to Los Angeles. We had been there before, about five years ago, but on a different kind of trip (a Disneyland-Universal Studios kind of trip). This time we were able to see a more sophisticated side of LA. Even though it was just a few days, we were able to cover a lot of ground. There were, of course, the wonderful tours of the Eames House and the Stahl House, but we also visited the incredible exhibition of Urs Fischer at MOCA, the Dwell on Design event at the Convention Center, The Getty and the Griffith Observatory with their magnificent views of LA, and even had a chance to enjoy a little bit of Santa Monica before running back to the airport on the last day. My favorite part of the trip was touring the Eames and Stahl houses. The experience was fantastic. I was trained as an architect, currently work in visual communications and I'm also a painter, so I had seen pictures of both for many years, but being there, the significance of the buildings … I was just blown away. I didn't want to leave. Also, meeting two grandchildren of Charles Eames and getting some impressions directly from Mark Stahl, made this whole experience even better. The highlight for my wife was MOCA, the Fischer exhibition was a hit with her. By the way, I want to publicly recognize her for keeping up with me in those shoes she was wearing. She looked beautiful, but those were not the most comfortable shoes to be sporting as a tourist in LA. As for my favorite piece of modern design, I get this question often, and the answer is always the same: definitely the Eames lounge chair and ottoman (670 & 671). I've loved that design ever since I can remember … to me that is a perfect piece of furniture. I'll have one someday! Feeling at home at the Stahl House.
