The Be Original Design Auction is now taking bids on furniture, light fixtures, designer bags, a watch, glassware and even a couple of restaurant meals. Proceeds will benefit Be Original’s Summer Design Fellowship, being run this year for the first time.
The auction comprises 34 donated items or experiences from the members of Be Original Americas, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to preserve past and promote future original design. Members include almost 70 companies, including Emeco, Fritz Hansen, Herman Miller and DWR, many of whom donated goods for the Design Auction.
DWR gave a Helix Side Table by Chris Hardy and a Jens Chair and Ottoman by Jens Risom, whose 100th birthday will be celebrated May 8. Herman Miller contributed a Nelson Platform Bench. Fritz Hansen gave two Oxford Chairs. And Mondaine donated an Evo Big Date Swiss Railways Watch. See all the items up for auction, which is being run by 501 Auctions.
Proceeds from the auction, which closes May 16, will help fund fellowships for two college juniors who have completed three years of post-secondardy study in the U.S. in subjects related to design, or have a demonstrated interest in a career in the design industry.
The students, not yet selected, will get a chance to study the development of authentic products from research and design to manufacture and distribution, traveling to New York City and elsewhere across the country for first-hand encounters with companies that are Be Original members and in the business of making and selling original, authored products. Besides DWR, participating companies include Herman Miller, Chilewich, Emeco and many more.
Travel and lodging will be paid by Be Original, and each fellow receives a $3,500 grant. The program runs for seven weeks, from June 13 to August 2, and fellows will be expected to make a presentation to the Be Original board afterward.
