Anniversaries and such.

It seems hard for me to believe, but we are in our tenth year. It certainly has been an interesting journey. When we launched our little company in 1999, it was a catalog with a website, and while we believed it should work, who really knows until you push the small tyke out of the nest. In fact, we had a bit of a scare after we mailed our first book and the phone hadn’t started to ring. Perhaps junior wasn’t the budding genius we thought he would be. But then our CEO at the time noticed that no one had turned off the phone night service, so all the calls were going to voicemail. As soon as we switched it over, the calls started pouring in and we began to feel better about our little venture.

Over the next 10 years we lived through the dotcom bubble (which helped get us going – thank you Steve and Bill) and the bursting of said bubble, which was far less pleasant. But as the saying goes, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. The next few years were relatively uneventful and we enjoyed rather nice growth (thank you DWR customers and design enthusiasts). Then we were all shocked by the events of September 11, 2001. We were rocked to our very core and the job of selling chairs suddenly seemed far less significant. But before long we did what all people do. We mourned, we contemplated the meaning of it all and we got back to living.

Today we are working our way through an economic situation that is unprecedented in the recent history of our nation. Many people have lost their jobs and many more are concerned about the future. Our little company has certainly not gone untouched by these events. We have reduced our workforce by 30%, and our overall expenses by even more. For the last six months, our products have been on sale constantly in order to generate revenue and reduce inventories. All of this has been trying, but it has positioned us well to have a very good chance of celebrating our 20th anniversary too.

So, when our team was trying to decide how to best celebrate this milestone, it was suggested (and widely agreed upon) that we provide the people who helped us get here (that would be you folks) an opportunity to enhance their surroundings. Starting tomorrow, we will be offering you a never-seen-before (and perhaps not repeated for another decade) offer. We’ve never offered this kind of discount on our entire assortment, and you get free shipping to boot.

Over the next few weeks, you will be hearing more about what we have been up to during the last few months and what you can continue to expect in the future. For certain, it includes honesty in all we do and it does not include continuing with deep discounts. Because deep discounts indicate one of two things: Either the company that is doing the discounting is liquidating – as in “bye bye” – or their prices are artificially inflated to allow this deep discounting, which we consider less than honest.

So, we would like to get a dialogue going with all of you about pricing, quality, what you need and what we can do to bring it all together, within a framework that is DWR. What does that mean? Well, simply put, it is about the value of smart design. Staying true to the fundamental tenets of modernism, we will expand upon our ability to satisfy your need for lasting value, with products that satisfy our standards of quality and design.

So stay tuned – and let us know what you think. In the meantime, preshop our Anniversary Sale (it starts at midnight).

Thanks,

Ray Brunner

Cheers-ing chairs in Berkeley.

The Champagne Chair tour is underway. During the Studio events to honor these miniature examples of iconic modern design, hilarity often ensues. At the Berkeley Studio event on February 12, Jesse Menayan – designer of the Judges’ Pick winner, the Kub Armchair – was on hand to enjoy some spirits and take in the other winners. The 50 best entries are still on tour: Find an event near you here.

Worlds collide.

One of the many perks of living in New York is the opportunity to get a glimpse into worlds unrelated to your own. If you work in the fashion industry, you’ve been spending the past week attending runway shows and studio presentations, meeting with designers, and seeing - or selecting - what will be on the racks five months from now. Occasionally the world of fashion and furniture intersect, as they did at Tom Scott’s installation, held in a Midtown Manhattan storefront. For his Fall/Winter 2009 presentation, Tom, a fashion designer known for quirky architectural knits that can be worn in multiple ways, filled the abandoned shop with bewigged mannequins, racks of “I heart NY” wire hangers, and furniture from DWR. Tom spoke about his pieces at a Product Placement event in DWR’s Flatiron Studio in January, and decided then that DWR would work with his concept for the installation. We’re excited to be part of his vision, and to wear the gathered back sweater shown on the mannequin above come September!

From the CEO: Rumors and other interesting stuff.

Recently there have been a lot of postings and rumors regarding DWR and our future here on planet Earth. I am always surprised to see how many people have a passionate opinion about our little company and feel so strongly about us. I have read many of these postings, fielded many calls and, within the limits of what can be said, attempted to explain our current status to all who have asked. However the level of interest has risen to such a crescendo that I can no longer address them one at a time and still have hours left in the day to devote to the task of steering the company successfully. So I am going to try to address the questions and concerns here and hopefully provide a base of clear information for everyone who is interested. So here goes:

1. What’s up with hiring an investment banker? We received an unsolicited offer in late December from a private equity firm to acquire the business, which we presented to our Board of Directors for review. The Board advised us that it would be in the shareholders’ best interests, as well as a part of our fiduciary responsibility, to consider the offer. We hired Thomas Weisel Partners as our investment banker to help us analyze the offer and determine whether there might be other parties interested in making offers, possibly at higher prices. We then issued a press release to let the general public, and all interested parties, know that we did receive an offer, it is being considered and other interested parties may submit competing offers. Once the bids are received and reviewed, the Board will again review them and determine if any would be in the shareholders’ best interest to accept. Or, they may reject all of them if they are not deemed to offer the shareholders an acceptable price for the company.

2. How are we doing? Well, thanks for asking. The management team and all 400 of our people continent-wide

Bravo!

Bravo_at_DWR_2

DWR's Columbus Avenue Studio recently had Nathan Thomas, winner of Bravo's Top Design Season 2, take on a new design challenge. His brief was to create his ideal workspace using pieces from DWR's collection, mixed with a few surprises sourced from the local Housing Works (whose thrift stores fund AIDS and homeless relief). On February 12, Nathan presented his design, which included a Cross Table topped with white acrylic, a pair of Paulistano chairs and graphic black and white vases that Nathan revealed were actually wine bottles that he had covered with opaque paint. The striking backdrop to the workspace was a wall which Nathan primed with chalkboard paint, then invited artist Aaron Johnson to fill with a chalk mural. To top this off, Nathan installed a blue neon sign spelling out the suggestion (or command?) "TRUST ME." Among the honored guests attending Nathan's standing-room-only presentation were Top Design finalists Ondine and Eddie, and Elle Decor Editor-in-Chief and Top Design judge, Margaret Russell.

(Drum roll please.) And the winners are…

Champagne_winners

Our annual Champagne Chair Contest always provides a fascinating study in the creative potential of everyday materials. This year was no different. The three winning entries are pictured above. From left to right: Jesse Menayan’s Kub Armchair won the Judges’ Pick, Tony Nemyer’s Grape Divine Chair was selected the DWR Staff Pick and Gavri Slasky’s Spring 2009 nabbed the Popular Vote. Those weren’t easy decisions – there was much design acumen demonstrated in this year’s entries. (Nothing like a bottle of bubbly to get the inspiration going…) Want to see some more? The three winners, plus 47 other finalists, are now on a nationwide tour of DWR Studios. Click here to find a Studio near you to see the best and the bubbliest from this year’s contest. Thanks to all those who entered or voted.

Palm Beach modern.

The 2009 PalmBeach3 Contemporary Art Fair was marked by buoyant sales and record attendance throughout its run, January 15 through 18, at the Palm Beach County Convention Center. The West Palm Beach Studio made its mark at the world-renowned fair by providing the best in modern furniture. Several areas at the show, including the VIP section, were embellished with David Trubridge and Marcel Wanders lighting. Also making appearances were classics by Ray and Charles Eames, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and George Nelson. The well-attended event was a perfect forum for those who appreciate fine art and modern design.

Moving in.

The first DWR Annex on the West Coast is on track to open its doors in Palm Springs this Friday. Located in the Uptown Design District, we’ve found the perfect spot for our Annex Palm Springs, which will be not just an outlet, but also a full-service Studio. We love that so many folks in the Palm Springs area share our values and appreciation for modernism – it’s a perfect pairing. Moving in is always a lot of work, but so very exciting. Come by and visit when you’re in the area.
