We’ll miss you Julius Shulman.

It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of our dear friend Julius Shulman. The legendary photographer died on July 15 at the age of 98. Shulman has been part of our family since the beginning, and it seems like everyone at DWR has a great story about Shulman or one of his photographs above their desk or a favorite book of his work in their library. Shulman amazed us with his talent and kept us laughing with his stories. We loved him dearly, and as my colleague Matt Wilkerson so graciously put it, “we should all be so lucky to live a life as full as his was.”

I had the pleasure of touring Julius around Silver Lake 20 years ago. He gave me an ongoing dialogue about the architectural treasures and original owners of the significant homes of that area.

Years later, at a book signing, he remembered vividly the occasion.

I will never forget his spirit.

I met Mr. Shulman in New York City at a Taschen Book store in Soho at a book signingin 2008.

Not only was he gracious in signing my book, he asked me to sit with him while he signed the books of others. When someone asked a question, he would ask my opinion, MINE! In between the signings we talked about photography, the idea of capturing, reflecting, bouncing and supplementing light, digital vs. film photography, modern architecture in it's American infancy and how it has developed.

I sat with him for over an hour. It confirmed my resolve about architecture and photography. Guess, (we), I will not be able to attend his 100 year birthday party he enthusiastically spoke of that day.

Truly your "magic" and spirit will be greatly missed but, I cannot wait to see your pictures of Heaven!
