A Hue-morous Way to Organize Your Books.

Starring an ordinary bookshelf with the extraordinary ability to single-handedly coordinate its contents by hue, this playful stop-motion animation video by Sean Ohlenkamp and Lisa Blonder Ohlenkamp may tempt even the most stringent catalogers to reconsider their organizational methods.

Tell us, how do you organize your bookshelf? By subject? By author? By color?

Be careful when you dust behind the sofa.

CrocoLocoEdelman
According to the BBC, a woman in Brazil found an alligator hiding behind her sofa. The report says she was "alerted to the reptile's presence by her three-year-old son, who was petting the reptile's head." One has to wonder, was it a crocodile leather sofa? Time flies.

CalatravaQuadracciPav
It's hard to believe that it's been 10 years since Santiago Calatrava completed his $100 million Quadracci Pavilion at the Milwaukee Art Museum. The captivating structure includes a steel brise soleil that unfolds each morning and folds back up at night. The museum will celebrate this marvel of engineering and grace with an exhibit opening in September. When you go, be sure to check out our Globus Chairs, designed by Jesús Gasca, in the Windhover Hall (shown below).

New York Times: Objects for Minimalists.

TractorStoolDWR
In today’s paper, architects Brian Messana and Toby O’Rorke share their favorite pieces of furniture to use in projects. One of which is our Tractor Stool by BassamFellows. “We use this in all of our projects,” Mr. Messana said. “I love that the shape is based on a tractor seat, and that it’s solid wood,” he said. “There’s no fuss about it.”

Historic preservationists vs. Steve Jobs.

SteveJobsHomeDemolished
For nearly a decade, Steve Jobs has been fighting preservationists over his plans to demolish his Woodside, California home. Built 86 years ago, the 30-room Spanish Colonial Revival home was designed by architect George Washington Smith for copper baron Daniel Jackling. Jobs lived in it for a while, and then left it vacant as he pursued permits to destroy the house and build something smaller. Eleven years of neglect later, the home was determined to be beyond repair and the town granted the demotion permit. Two days ago, it was torn down. What do you think, should the buyer of a historically significant home be responsible for its legacy, or is it theirs to keep or destroy as they please?

DWR seating is on the menu.

SaltChairAndEraStool
The new Van Horn Sandwich Shop in Brooklyn has been receiving rave reviews for its food, drinks and (most importantly, in our opinion) its decor. Furnished by Design Within Reach, the Cobble Hill eatery has Salt Chairs and Era Barstools to relax in as you enjoy their Southern-inspired sandwiches. If you go, be sure to send us a comment with your review of Salt and Era seating (and let me know if they mix a mean Side Car).

Happy Birthday Verner Panton.

VernerPantonSpiral
Celebrating what would have been his 85th birthday, we're featuring the work of Verner Panton today. Drawing on his architectural background, Panton designed ground-breaking domestic living spaces – fusing disparate elements such as floor, wall, furniture, lighting, and textile – into wholly original and indivisible interiors. The effects of these spaces, with Panton's characteristic preferences for geomatric shapes and intense colors, melded seamlessly with the emerging psychadelic sensibilities. Exhibit: the grand dame of French interior design.

PutmanMorgansHotelBath
Through February 26, an exhibit at Hôtel de Ville de Paris is celebrating the famed French interior designer Andrée Putman. With a career spanning six-decades, Putman is known as “la reine du damier” (the queen of the checkerboard). Her signature graphics have been installed on everything from luxury jets to pianos to the rooms of the Morgans Hotel in New York. In her work with this hotel, she invented the boutique hotel concept and later designed the Morgans Chair.

Be my modern Valentine.

ValentineEamesCard
If you miss your favorite chair enough to send it a Valentine, this Etsy card is for you. It could also be sent to your significant other, but I'm not sure what the message is... I miss sitting with you? You are as well designed as an Eames Chair? Whatever it is, the card is unique, and sure to get someone's mid-century love vibe going. Happy V day.

Travel art: up, up and away.

DavidKleinPosterTWA
During the 1950s and 1960s, David Klein designed and illustrated dozens of posters for Trans World Airlines (TWA). His influential work captured the excitement of air travel and defined the language of travel advertising and poster art of the period. His highly collectible posters include landmarks such as the Gateway Arch (shown above) designed in 1947 by Eero Saarinen. Learn more about David Klein.

A marvel of grace and beauty.

ShellChair by Wegner
Hans J. Wegner (pronounced VEG-ner in English and VAY-ner in Danish) preferred to work in solid wood, but occasionally he explored the use of bent plywood, and for that we are very thankful. Sometimes called the “smiling chair,” his Shell Chair (1963) achieves a floating lightness due to its wing-like seat and the arching curves of its tapered legs. If DWR sold cars...

Screen shot 2011-02-02 at 2.42.22 PM
About once a year, I get car lust for some sleek beauty that I know I'm too much of a spazz to drive. This year's crush: the One-77 by Aston Martin. The English company, founded in 1913, will build only 77 of these, and every one has already been sold. The fact that the rest of us will have to admire it from afar is befitting for something designed to be "closer to art than the automobile," said Marek Reichman, director of design.
