Congratulations to Eduardo Souto de Moura on being named the 2011 Pritzker Architecture Prize Laureate. Widely considered to be architecture's highest honor, the award will be presented to the 58-year-old architect from Portugal on June 2. “During the past three decades, Eduardo Souto de Moura has produced a body of work that is of our time but also carries echoes of architectural traditions.” said Pritzker Prize jury chairman, The Lord Palumbo. “His buildings have a unique ability to convey
Take a stroll around NYC with our partners at STUA, the creators of the iconic Globus, Nube, Onda and other marvels of modern seating. STUA stands for Solo Tengo Un Amor (I have only one love) but based on this video, it's clear that they also love NYC (or maybe it's just a crush). Either way, it's a nice video, narrated by our very own Kristian Lazzaro. Enjoy.
Our April catalog (visit a DWR Studio to pick up a copy) mentions this video, so we're reposting it to make it easy to find. Check out our Luau LED Portable Lamp in action. The Luau can be used indoors and out. The light is dimmable, rechargeable and uses long-lasting LEDs. Enjoy the show.

As the person whose window was going to be covered by this banner, I applaud the installer who moved it one window to the right. Our move-in date is rapidly approaching and this banner is a huge sign (literally) of the progress being made at the new DWR Headquarters in Stamford, CT. Our offices will be on the second and third floors, and the first floor will be a fabulous new DWR Studio where you can test-drive the best in modern design. Keep an eye on this blog for the announcement of our opening in May!
One of the following six finalists will be awarded the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture, also known as the Mies van der Rohe Award. The finalists are: David Chipperfield Architects for Neues Museum in Berlin; MDMA for Bronks Youth Theatre in Belgium; Zaha Hadid Architects for MAXXI (shown above) in Italy; Ateliers Jean Nouvel for Concert House Danish Radio in Denmark; Bernard Tschumi Architects for Acropolis Museum in Greece; and Koen van Velsen for Rehabilitation Centre Groot Klimmendaal in The Netherlands. The ceremony will be held on June 20 at the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion in Barcelona.
From lime to jade to hunter to mint – we have all shades of green for indoor and outdoor living. Hundreds of additional choices are available via custom order and you can even supply your own fabric or leather if you wish. Anything is possible at Design Within Reach.
One day into Spring, and Old Man Winter has kindly sent a parting gift -- a dusting of snow at the DWR headquarters. Layers of shirts, scarves and sweaters abound, and right about now, we're thinking that a Uni Flame Fireplace would be a great addition to have around the office. The Uni uses clean-burning ethanol fuel, so it works indoors and outdoors, and gives off a enough heat to keep you nice and toasty.
If you think the Uni Flame looks like a fireplace from the future, check out this radiator from the Matières à chaud or "Hot Materials" collection by 5.5 Designers for SAAZS.
Wondering how it works? Actually, it's quite simple. A pane of Thermovit glass at the center of the piece transmits radiant heat, in turn heating a room by warming the objects inside of it. The Matières à chaud collection will debut at Salone Internazionale del Mobile next month.
Tulsa, OK: Through May 14, this traveling exhibit explores how "sleek aerodynamic styling embodied a new and modern beauty." The show presents 180 objects by such designers as Henry Dreyfuss and Russel Wright. As reported in Antiques and The Arts Weekly, "objects in diverse new materials, from Bakelite to stainless steel, are organized thematically around the spheres of American life in the 1930s–50s." If you can't make it to Oklahoma, there is a book by David A. Hanks and Anne Hoy to accompany this exhibit.
Imagine designing the quintessential café chair that’s been in production since 1934, but without one crucial skill: the ability to draw. “Dad didn’t draw,” recalls Henriette, the daughter of Xavier Pauchard. Instead, the designer “drafted” his prototypes by working with the material with which he was most comfortable: steel. Learn more about the Marais Chair designed by Xavier Pauchard and produced by Tolix in France.
Progress continues on the new DWR corporate offices, located in the former Yale & Towne lock factory in Stamford, Connecticut. We’ve outgrown our temporary digs across the street (and the furniture makes us cranky) but a recent tour of the new space did wonders for morale. Ever wish you could work for DWR? Check out our career opportunities at the corporate office and in DWR Studios across the country.
Some items that are rarely on sale – like the work of Le Corbusier and Arne Jacobsen – are included in our Semiannual Sale. Save hundreds on thousands of items, from floor to ceiling, for inside and out. Shop the sale at dwr.com, 1.800.944.2233 and DWR Studios through Tuesday, March 22.
Wondering what 111 people have to say about the 111 Navy Chair? Check out the responses we’ve received from architects, designers and other industry professionals. The response card above is from Tucker Viemeister, who is the holder of 32 U.S. utility patents, a graduate of Pratt Institute and, in keeping with his creative profile, named after the “car of tomorrow” called the Tucker 48. See additional responses.

See the DWR catalog team in action. This video was filmed on location in Miami during our photo shoot for our March catalog. The "models" included five new collections for outdoor living. After five days and a few mini-dramas (every chair wants to be the star) the shoot was complete.
Remember to set your clocks ahead one hour on Sunday, March 13. And while I've never seen any statistics about this, it seems to me that there could be an increase in fender benders at this time -- due to all the folks trying to reset the clocks in their cars while they drive. So stay alert and spring ahead (and don't forget to shop the DWR Semiannual Sale).
From 12-2am, Chen includes "ghost trains" for lines that no longer exist, such as the 8 train or the 3rd Avenue El.
Based on Massimo Vignelli's 1972 subway map, Alexander Chen's MTA Conductor engages both the transit geek and the indifferent commuter. The digital representation of the New York City subway system updates in real time and speeds up as time lapses, eventually cycling through to a 24-hour loop of transit patterns.
The highlight of the piece (and the rationale as to why Chen calls the Conductor an interactive string instrument) occurs when the train lines intersect, producing a reaction much like a cello string in both sight and sound.
If you're interested in learning more about MTA history, check out the interactive New York Times article "An Overhaul of an Underground Icon."
Check out our Luau LED Portable Lamp in action. The Luau can be used indoors and out. The light is dimmable, rechargeable and uses long-lasting LEDs. What more could you ask for? OH! It's also on sale. Enjoy the show.
In an article written by Kim Cook for the Associated Press, three DWR products are suggested as ways to bring a sense of serenity to your home. Cook writes, "At Design Within Reach, find One & Co.'s 47 Table, a chunk of timber given a shimmery coat of silver. Or gravitate toward the Toto Cube Lamp, created by a French wine tank manufacturer during its quiet season; the lamp is large enough to use as a seat or table, and is lit from inside with a warm glow." The Oppiacei Table is also mentioned.
