Smile, you're at the Glass House.

One of the best things about summer is getting to visit The Philip Johnson Glass House for its annual summer party. DWR provided outdoor seating at the event, including the Eos Collection by Matthew Hilton, the Tolix Marais Collection by Xavier and Jean Pauchard and the Frank Gehry Left Twist Cube.

This year, we were able to capture all the guests who made the Glass House Summer Party a huge success. Take a moment to view the album below and share with family and friends.

Dream a little green: CU Boulder’s Green Design Competition.

Josh Arndt_ see saw full view (2)

The DWR Boulder Studio has been working with University of Colorado architecture professor Julee Herdt to inspire the next generation of eco-friendly designers. With her course Green Technology: Design from Salvage, she charged her students with designing “an architectural object of beauty and high functionality without spending much (or any) money; vying for selection and exhibition in DWR Boulder’s storefront.” Well, the winners are in and they are extraordinarily innovative. We are proud to introduce you to the work of Josh Arendt, Matt Nickel and Taylor Hawley.

The future – as envisioned 70 years ago.

I’ve discussed on these very pages the nearly magical alchemical force that was Charles and Ray Eames’ creative energy. But even geniuses are sometimes constrained by the capacity of the times. So, back in 1950, when they conceived of the simple, accessible, organic form that became their Molded Plastic Chair, the vision was initially made with the warmth and material honesty of wood. Unfortunately those sexy curves were just too dramatic for the capacity of their “Kazam! machine.” Finally, Herman Miller®, in collaboration with the Eames heirs, have applied today’s 3-D veneer technology – whereby the wood is sliced into spaghetti-thin strips and then glued back together – to the creation of this new (old) design. The Eames® Molded Wood Chair is already a classic, it’s available exclusively at DWR and, conveniently enough, it’s also on sale.

Show your support for the Eames House.

Charles and Ray Eames moved into their Pacific Palisades home, also known as Case Study House #8, on Christmas Eve in 1949. For the rest of their lives, this was where they lived, worked and played, and today the interior remains very much as they left it. The Eames Foundation is taking serious efforts to conserve the property and stay ahead of the forces of nature weathering this iconic steel frame structure overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Rather than waiting for the house to be in crisis, they've launched the 250 Year Project to plan for future needs now, and you're invited to be part of this important mission.

To help, you can purchase a limited-edition print inspired by an Eames quote or an object from the house. Each tax-deductible print costs $75, and all proceeds go to the Eames House.

The past, present and future of design at WantedDesign.

The Ø Chair designed by Asher Israelow.

At this year's WantedDesign, DWR launched the Helix Table by Chris Hardy alongside a showcase of seven designers who we feel represent the design industry’s future. While materials and methods differ, commonalities of smart design, solving old problems in new ways and being relevant to how we live ring true in their works.

Meet the Past, Present and Future Designers: Tamasyn Gambell.

Meet Tamasyn Gambell, one of the designers we'll be showcasing this week at WantedDesign.

“I use the most eco-friendly materials and processes,” says textile designer Tamasyn Gambell, “as I believe that designers have a responsibility to the environment and that being green does not have to compromise style or quality.”

After graduating from the Royal College of Art and Design in London, designer Tamasyn Gambell headed to Paris, where she mastered her trade at couture houses such as Sonia Rykiel and Louis Vuitton. In 2007 she relocated to Stockholm to explore the opposite end of the spectrum, as a print designer for H&M, launching her own company a year later. A true contemporary modernist, Gambell believes that good design and green design go hand in hand.

Mixing it up in Cambridge.

Forrest Making Magic

The DWR Cambridge Studio hosted Forrest Butler of Royal Rose Syrups, who showed the crowd how to make sophisticated original cocktails. Seeing a rise in high-end, handcrafted spirits – but a void in similarly crafted syrups – Forrest and his wife started Royal Rose in Brooklyn in 2010. In 2011 they sold their first batch of syrups and by ’12 had outgrown their Brooklyn digs and relocated to Portland, Maine. Certified 100% organic, Royal Rose Syrups now come in six amazing flavors, including three-chili, saffron and Tamarind.

The May catalog is here (and it includes a very special Eames chair).

The May catalog is now available online and in Studios.

Dear Readers,

Spring is here and we couldn’t be more excited. This is a time of birth and rebirth, and this month’s catalog represents both. Proving that the Eameses were 63 years ahead of their time, we are honored to be launching their Molded Wood Chair, never in production until now. Inside you’ll also find a table from Tolix® and a task chair from Cherner, the latter produced from sketches discovered by Norman Cherner’s son Ben. We bring you one of my favorite chairs of all time in Alexander Begge’s Casalino, a chair I have lived with for almost 20 years. This month, we also celebrate the arrival of Helix tables by Chris Hardy, who is one of our favorite new designers and someone we are championing.

Hello, sunshine: A letter from our President and CEO.

Go to "It takes a village ... and a VW bus" for behind-the-scenes coverage of this photoshoot.

Dear Readers,

Happy spring! We love traveling through the seasons with you. Flowers are poking through the grass, and the days are getting longer. The new season sheds a fresh light on our homes, and this makes me think redecorate.

For indoors and out, we have product to inspire you. This is a time when “outdoors and indoors are inseparable,” said landscape architect Garrett Eckbo. “They are two sides of the same door.”
