Josh Owen visits DWR Philly.

DWR’s Philadelphia Studio kicked off Design Philadelphia 2008 on October 16 with the U.S. release party for Philly-based designer Josh Owen’s SOS stool. The turn-out was huge! I lost count somewhere around 100 – it didn’t hurt that Owen was the featured cover story of the City Paper that day or that one of Philly’s best restaurants, Fork Restaurant, sponsored the event. After mingling with local designers and design students, Josh gave a great presentation detailing his design approach for the project. Well-established in both academia and praxis, Josh spoke to us not only of the design precedents that contributed to the concept of his SOS stool, but also of the manufacturing parameters that inform design decisions – a very engaging lecture. The stool, designed for Casamania, made its debut earlier this year at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile and has already been accepted as part of the permanent collection at the Centre Pompidou. Thanks to Bryce Gibson for the above photo.
