“Companies that produce knockoffs cherry-pick and copy without any risk and without acknowledging the visionary designers,” says Jan Vingerhoets, CEO of Flos, the Italian company founded by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, designers of the Arco Lamp. “Knockoffs are adversely affecting the future of creativity, our environment and our economic well-being.”

Flos is proud to be a member of Be Original Americas, joining Alessi, Cassina, Chilewich, Emeco, Fritz Hansen, Herman Miller, Vitra and, of course, DWR in the fight against counterfeit design.

“We feel an educated public is the best offense and defense against the proliferation of copies,” says Vingerhoets. “That’s the approach Be Original Americas is taking – to educate, to inform and to influence consumers, designers, retailers and students on what original design means. Companies like Flos are courageous, avant-garde and pushing the envelope of innovation in their approach to producing products, walking an invisible ‘borderline’ that defines a successful product or a non-successful one in terms of sales volume.”

Vingerhoets’ appreciation for courageous work extends to his love of architecture, especially that of Tadao Ando, a self-taught architect. “Ando’s style represents the beauty of simplicity with a twist,” he says. “His structures often have complex circulation paths that create unity between house and nature. This is often achieved by playing with translucence and opacity.”

When we asked Vingerhoets what makes him an original, he replied: “I’m curious, somewhat disruptive and always looking for something new, even in myself. I’m always asking ‘what can I do differently?’ and when I begin something, I’ll do it with a twist and leave no stone unturned until I finish. It takes endurance – in sports and business – to realize far-reaching challenges. Creating a changed and more knowledgeable consumer on the true importance of authentic design is one of them.”

DWR is proud to be a member of Be Original Americas™, the leader in fighting counterfeit design. Being a member means that we’re a vetted retailer of authentic goods.
